Incident Report for Polygon

Postmortem

Date: July 20, 2025
Time: 01:47 UTC – ~02:47 UTC
Status: Resolved

Affected Services

Summary

At approximately 01:47 UTC, users began experiencing failures when attempting to bridge assets through the Polygon Portal. A temporary banner was enabled on the UI to communicate that bridging was disabled during the issue. This was a precautionary measure taken while backend systems were being investigated. The disruption lasted approximately 1 hours.

Technical Overview

  • Ethereum Indexer: The indexer service failed to process certain source chain queries due to upstream RPC instability. This caused the bridge backend to lose access to critical Ethereum state data.
  • RPC Infrastructure: The root cause was traced to intermittent failures in the upstream Ethereum RPC provider, which led to degraded responses or timeouts during indexing operations.

Resolution

By ~02:47 UTC, Ethereum RPC service had stabilized and the indexer resumed consistent behavior. Following verification of restored functionality and data consistency, the banner was removed and bridge services were re-enabled on the Portal.
